What It Means to Be an Advocate
The child of a Hispanic/First American and Irish immigrant family, Jodi-Renee (JR) Girón began her work in advocacy organically by organizing a community-based program for at-risk Hispanic/Latino youth in her hometown community in Denver. After studying for an M.Div. in Chaplaincy, she lived outside Detroit, advocating for issues around prisoner re-entry supports for teen mothers, and facilitating training. Since moving to Lincoln in 2016, she has brought together her own origin story with the common factors of the communities she’s walked with to focus on equitable access in education and early childhood issues. She’s excited to now serve as the grassroots and outreach advisor at First Five Nebraska and continues to provide quality training for advocates in education and equity work.
